“TELLING EVERYONE ABOUT KRISTA WILL HELP KIDS OF THE FUTURE”

by Simone McNorton

The Children’s Safety Village of Windsor and Essex County is pleased to announce the establishment of a lasting memorial to honor the memory of Krista McNorton, thanks to a donation of $25,000.00 from the Town of Tecumseh and the Krista McNorton Memorial Committee.

Eleven-year-old Krista was tragically killed by a VIA passenger train while taking a short cut along the railway tracks in Tecumseh in July of 1996.

The Children’s Safety Village, a Rotary Club project, will teach thousands of children annually  from Junior Kindergarten to Grade Five about road, rail and fire safety in a hands-on, kid-sized version of our city streets. “It is the perfect place to honour Krista and share her story,” said Mayor Ed Renaud in making the donation to the Village.

“The Rotary Club will create a lasting memorial to Krista,” added Rotarian Fred Sorrell. “A small treed park area featuring a fountain is planned in Krista’s memory. The yellow-brick road theme winding throughout the village will connect with the park area and will grow as donations are made in Krista’s memory. Krista’s story, written by her mother Simone, will be displayed prominently in the village for all visitors to read,” explained Sorrell.

The Safety Village fundraising team will be working with the Town of Tecumseh and area business to establish a local donation campaign. Donation forms will be available throughout Tecumseh. Donations in Krista’s memory can be designated to buy a yellow brick or support the village in general.

The village will increase awareness of railroad safety and “Telling everyone about Krista will help kids of the future,” said Simone McNorton, Krista’s mother
